Leave the building first. Call 911 or your gas utility from outside, and do not switch lights or appliances on or off on the way out. Once the utility or fire department says it is safe, call us to repair the equipment.

What to check while you wait.

• The thermostat is set to heat or cool and has fresh batteries
• The breaker, and the emergency switch near the boiler or furnace, which looks like a light switch, often with a red plate
• A visibly dirty furnace filter, which you can replace
• On a steam boiler, the sight glass: if no water shows, shut the boiler off and wait for us
• Space heaters stay away from curtains and bedding, and never use an oven to heat a room

Landlords: heat season rules.

From October 1 to May 31, New York City requires rental buildings to keep apartments at least 68°F from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. when it is below 55°F outside, and at least 62°F overnight. If you own a building and the heat is down, call us any time.
